Sailing Theory, Sailing Terms and Weather
Sailing Theory The sum of all wind pressure on the sail is called wind force. The center of that force, which is above the water, is called the center of effort (CE). The center of the force below the surface of the water is calledthe center of lateral resistance (CLR). This is the point where all the boat s resistance to sideways pressure is concentrated. A boat performs best when the two forces are in balance. This is when they are positioned one over the other in a vertical line through the boat s sail and hull. Your job as a sailor is to keep these two forces in proper balance so that your ..

Things to Consider in Making Your Decision - RYA Sailing Courses Voyage Sea School
While I would highly urge anyone to take up sailing, it s a
personal decision that only you can make. In order to help you
think things through, here are some things to consider:
Do you enjoy being outside?
This is pretty obvious, but you do need to honestly assess how
much you enjoy being out in the elements. Weather conditions can
change from great to awful in an instant, and you might be quite
a few minutes from shore when they do. Also, if you hate water
or being wet, you should seriously consider not sailing.

Sailing is becoming an increasingly popular recreational activity for families, and with good reason. On a sailboat that requires someone steering at the helm, someone navigating from a map, and even someone swabbing the deck, there is a lot to be done, so there can be a role for everyone from grandpa down to the smallest tot. Sailing as a family encourages the kind of l ..

Sailing Hints and Tips
I spend almost all my summers sailing around the Greek islands. With this small article I would like to share some sailing hints with you that will help you enjoy the most out of your sailing holidays.
- When moored or anchored, use your sun tent and stay under it most of the time. Our friend, the Sun, sometimes can be dangerous, especially during summertime.
- Be cautious on board and if possible, always wear a pair of soft boat shoes. This way you will protect your feet and the deck surface. When sailing, avoid walking on deck without particular reason and in rough weather, rememb ..
New Winter Sailing Destinations in the Caribbean
Although the sailing season in the South Eastern Mediterranean runs from mid-May to the end of October, there is still significant demand from European sailors for charters in waters warm during the long, cold Northern winter.
Traditionally the Caribbean has been the main beneficiary of this. The British have tended to go to the ex-colonies - the Virgin Islands, Antigua, and Grenada. This always has two problems. Travel costs are high and/or inflexible, and the area is equally popular with North Americans to the point that it gets very crowded. Getting there from the USA is seriously cheap ..
Buying a Used Sunfish Sailboat: Know The Ins and Outs Before Sailing Away
As anyone whos ever bought a used car knows, you have to approach the project armed with your own knowledge before you even set foot on the lot. In this situation, being uninformed is tantamount to being taken to the cleaners. The same goes for buying a sailboat. And, like automobiles, no sailboat is the same, so you should know the basics (and some particulars, as well) about the overall condition of the Sunfish sailboat you have your eye on. The first question should always be, of course, how much cash are you willing to part with? If you plan on upgrading a used Sunfish, that alone can cos ..
Sailing is not a complicated sport
It seems obvious how a sailboat sails downwind: It is pushed along by the wind in its sails. Less obvious is how it can sail upwind or how some sailboats can sail faster than the wind.
Sir Isaac Newton formulated three basic laws that pertain to the motions and accelerations of all objects.
Let us have a look at the third law:
For any force exerted on an object, an equal but opposite force must be exerted by that object onto whatever exerted the force.
A direct consequence of this law is the conservation of momentum (Momentum equals mass times velocity). The conservation of momentum tell ..
Sailing With Wind Orientation In Mind
On the sloops where I got my basic keelboat lessons, my neck developed a crick from constantly craning back to see what the Windex on top of the mast was doing. When I straightened out my neck, my eyes would fasten on the digital readouts of the knot meter and depth finder. It seemed as though sailing involved so much time monitoring different instruments and gauges that there was no time to appreciate the ride.
What did sailors do before the invention of onboard electronics and gadgets? One thing, I learned, was that they sailed with both ears. When the sensation of the wind was equal on bot ..
The Rise and Rise of Croatia for Sailing Holidays
In the 1980s, Croatia - then part of Yugoslavia - built up a sizeable yacht charter industry. It was never then on the scale to rival long time favourite Greece, but it was large enough to get itself noticed as an attractive coming destination. Then came the various Balkan wars - one of them involving Croatia itself - and the disintegration of old Yugoslavia. Croatia is now the ex-Yugoslav republic with almost all the coast line!
Since the wars ended the growth of the croatian yacht charter (see http://www.gyc-croatia.com industry has been little short of astonishing. In an industry notoriously short of credible sta ..

The Ultimate Sailing Vacation: Book a Cruise on a Tall Ship
From the coast of Maine to Key West, from The Pacific Northwest to Antarctica, tall ships offer a unique experience. Sailing vessels of centuries-old designs moved goods all over the world in the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries; now they enjoy an esteemed place in the minds and hearts of modern men and women.
Tall ships caught the publics imagination in the 1970s after having been relegated to the history books; everyone alive and conscious during the U.S. 1976 bicentennial remembers the glorious sight of scores of tall ships sailing into New York harbor, past the Statue ..
Sailing Multihulls Part 2: The Disadvantages
Disadvantages-- In serious wind and seas, a monohull sailor can, if absolutely exhausted and no longer able to steer, strike all sail, lock all hatches, and go below to wait it out and hope for the best. A well-found boat will most likely allow this. The boat will roll around like a cork, and even if it rolls 360 degrees it should be ok, as long as the mast doesn t break off and put a hole in the boat. A Multihull in huge seas, however, must always have a helmsman, or some other way to keep the boat pointed into the waves. Without this, the boat will end up in the wave troughs, with the waves ..
Sailing Tactics Revealed: Person Overboard!
Person Overboard! Sailing Rescue Techniques
Most one man-overboard drills usually consist of throwing over a cushion and returning to pick it up by the strap. A good sized fireplace log is a better way to do the practice because it is much more awkward to get aboard.
There are four important steps to retrieving a person who has gone overboard. The first is to return without delay to a position near the victim. The second is to maneuver your boat close enough so you connect him or her to the boat. The third is to get the person aboard, and the fourth is to see that they are ok.
The moment ..

Sailing: Multihulls-Catamarans andTrimarans
History -The catamaran is one of the oldest types of craft known. The word Catamaran has its origin in Malayan language -- Catu (to tie) and Maran ( log). Early Polynesians would lash two large canoes together and sail a whole village s worth people from one village to another, which usually meant sailing from one island to another. These people considered the stability of a two hulled vessel to be safer than that of just one hull. Until two centuries ago Polynesia was totally isolated from the rest of the civilized world, which was developing boats along what we now think of as more tradition ..
Simple Things for the Sailing Life
Owning a boat has an oxymoronic quality to it. The simple life can be pretty complex--I think of it as having a plane, a car, and a house compressed into a very small space. This specialized environment calls for specialized equipment and tactics...sometimes. In spite of what marine retailers would like us to think, there are a number of normal (and inexpensive) items that we can put to very efficient use aboard our boats. For example:
For easy lighting that won t impair your night vision, stock red cellophane (the kind you get in rolls in a gift wrap store) and rubber bands. Cut squar ..
